Ghostscript is an interpreter for PostScript® and Portable Document Format (PDF) files. If you have a Windows PC, GPL Ghostscript is a fast PostScript and PDF parser and rendering engine that has the largest collection of page description languages (PDLs) on the market right now. It can also convert between PDF, PostScript, PCL, and XPS languages.

Over 20 years of work has gone into making it better. It has a huge number of features that can be used on a lot of different platforms, modules, and end uses, such as building it into hardware, using it as an engine in document management systems, integrating it into cloud solutions, and using it as an engine in top PDF creators and tools.

GPL Ghostscript has a graphics package and a PostScript interpreter layer. It's more accurate to call these technologies Ghostscript instead of GhostPDL because they all share the same graphics package.

You can grab the app and (see below) GhostPDF (which is part of the binaries) for a number of different systems from this page. You can get both Ghostscript and GhostPDL from the same site and find the code there.

Do you know what GhostPDL, GhostPCL, and GhostXPS are?

A number of different types of the app's images library are also used in GhostPCL and GhostXPS. These are programs that can read files in the PCL and XPS forms, respectively. If you own all versions of the product, you can use GhostPDL to download this single archive, which will give you all versions in one easy download.

How do I install GhostScript on my Windows computer?

Get the newest version. Download the 32bit version if you're not sure if you want the 64bit version or not. Run the installer and follow the on-screen directions once it's done downloading.

If I have Ghostscript on Windows, how do I open a PDF or PostScript file?

Download Artifex Ghostscript, and then open the PDF file you want to look at in a new Explorer window. If that doesn't start the app, you might need to change the settings for the file type. It's not a watcher, but an interpreter. That's why it doesn't give much UI.
