DiskPart commands allow you to manage your PC's drives (disks, partitions, volumes, and virtual hard disks). To utilize DiskPart commands, first list and then choose an object to give it focus. When an item requires focus, any DiskPart instructions you type will apply to that object.

The list disk, list volume, list partition, and list vdisk commands allow you to list available objects and determine their numbers or drive letters. The list disk, list vdisk, and list volume commands reveal all of the computer's disks and volumes. However, the list partition command only shows the partitions on the disk that are now focused. When you use the list commands, an asterisk (*) displays next to the object under focus.

When you select an object, the emphasis stays on it until you select another object. For example, if the emphasis is on disk 0 and you choose volume 8 on disk 2, the focus switches from disk 0 to disk 2 volume 8. Some commands immediately shift the emphasis. For example, when you create a new partition, the emphasis immediately shifts to that partition.

You can only focus on one partition on the specified disk. When a partition is focused, the corresponding volume (if any) is also focused. If a volume maps to a single partition, the associated disk and partition are also focused. If this is not the case, focus on the disk and the partition will be lost.

The Microsoft Diskpart command interpreter supports the following commands:
