PsTools
The PsTools package includes a number of command-line applications that allow you to list processes running on local or remote systems, execute remote processes, reboot a computer, dump event logs, and perform other functions.
The Windows NT and Windows 2000 Resource Kits include a number of command-line tools for managing Windows NT/2000 systems. Over time, I accumulated a collection of similar tools, some of which were not included in the Resource Kits. What sets these tools apart is their ability to handle both local and distant systems.
The first utility in this collection was PsList, which gives you precise information on processes. Since then, the suite has grown steadily. I decided to utilize the "Ps" prefix in all of the tool names to create a cohesive suite called PsTools, which was inspired by the naming practice of the basic UNIX process listing command-line program, "ps".
The tools included in the PsTools suite, which is downloadable as a package, are:
- PsExec - Execute processes remotely.
- PsFile shows files opened remotely.
- PsGetSid displays the SID of a computer or user.
- PsInfo is a list of system information.
- PsPing measures network performance.
- PsKill: kill processes by name or process ID.
- PsList lists thorough information on processes.
- PsLoggedOn - see who's logged in locally and via resource sharing (complete source included).
- PsLogList dumps event log records.
- PsPasswd resets account passwords.
- PsService: View and Control Services
- PsShutdown - shuts down and optionally restarts a machine.
- PsSuspend - Suspends processes.
- PsUptime displays how long a system has been running since its last reboot.
