Folder Size for Windows adds a new column to the Details view of Windows Explorer. The new column displays the size of both files and folders. It keeps track of which folders you open and scans them in the background, allowing you to know the total size of all files in the folder. It is quite good for clearing out your drive. Once you're used to having such information available, a directory listing simply doesn't seem right without it! Folder Size for PC can be distributed under the provisions of the GNU General Public License.

Features and Highlights

  • Do not switch to another software to view folder sizes. It's always visible while you're browsing your folders (you can even change the view in the Open and Save file dialog boxes), and it's a wonderful visual signal to help you discover the one you're looking for. Not just for disk cleansing, but whenever you need to select a folder.
  • There is no scanning phase before you can begin. When you display the app column, you will immediately notice sizes. Large folders will continue to scan in the background while you browse through them.
Explorer will automatically update the folder size column in real time. No more manual rescanning.
  • Background scans will not use up all of your disk space. When the software detects that other programs are doing a lot of reading and writing to the hard disk being scanned, it will pause background scanning until the other programs have finished.
  • If you don't display the FolderSize column for a long, it will not forget what it has already scanned, but the background scanner will not be active. It will not consume any CPU time in maintaining the cache on your P2P sharing or gaming machine, which is constantly changing files.

User Interface

It has a simple and straightforward user interface. The main window is separated into two panes: the left pane shows your folder structure, while the right pane offers specific information about the selected folder. The UI is user-friendly and does not require any technical knowledge, making it accessible to users of all ability levels.

FAQ

Could it show folder sizes in megabytes, gigabytes, and terabytes for larger folders?
Absolutely! This feature can be enabled through the Folder Size Control Panel.

Folder Size appears to interfere with the TravelSafe encryption software on Kingston USB devices.
It suggests using other encryption software for a more seamless experience. Additionally, it is considering introducing an option to disable Folder Size for individual drives, which could address this issue.

Can it add folder sizes to the usual Size column rather than generating a new one?
Initially, it attempted to integrate folder sizes into the existing Size column, but there is no published technique for changing the built-in Size column. Despite its efforts, imposing this transformation did not produce favorable effects. If you have a creative solution for achieving this, I'd like to hear it.

Why is the column labeled Folder Size rather than simply Size?
To avoid misunderstanding with two columns having the same name, it chose "Folder Size" as the unique identifier for its column.

PROS

  • User-friendly and intuitive UI.
  • A detailed folder size analysis with adjustable settings.
  • Smooth interaction with Windows Explorer.
  • Ability to export and print reports.

CONS

  • There is limited historical data, so real-time analysis is the primary focus.

Conclusion

Finally, Folder Size for Windows is a useful application for people who want to understand their disk space utilization and manage their folders more efficiently. Its simple interface, adjustable scan options, and graphical representations make it easier to detect space-consuming folders. Whether you're a simple user trying to free up disk space or a power user managing complex file systems, the Folder Size tool is an excellent addition to your software toolset.
