Windows 10 is the latest in Microsoft Corporation's line of successful PC operating systems, successfully combining many online services, new app paradigms, and UI elements into a versatile OS that can run well on a wide range of devices, including home and business desktop PCs and laptops, tablets, smartphones, embedded systems, Surface Hub, Mixed Reality, and Xbox One.

Built on top of Windows 8.1, this latest OS update immediately became one of Microsoft's most successful, thanks in large part to respecting legacy customers who desired a streamlined Desktop experience without Win8's forced touch interface. The Windows 10 program was provided to the public in 2015 as a free update to all Windows 8 and Windows RT users, ensuring widespread acceptance.

The most important new features of the new Windows OS are its new mouse-oriented user interface (with full support for fast switching to touch-friendly UI), new Start Menu that mixes the popular Win7 and Win8 features, new Edge web browser that eventually adopted the popular Chromium rendering engine, new Task View window and desktop management tool, built-in support for facial and fingerprint recognition, deeper integration of Cortana voice assistant, and new game rendering AP.

Can I still download Windows 10 for free?

Yes, in order to install Windows 10, you must first obtain a license. You can then install and launch the Media Creation Tool.

While earlier versions of the Windows operating system received service packs (such as Windows 7) or new versions (such as Windows 8.1), Microsoft has decided to actively patch the OS for free throughout its existence. So far, it has gotten three major upgrades: versions 1903 and 1909 in 2019, and version 2004 in May 2020. The operating system is available in five major versions: Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, and a lightweight Windows 10 S designed to serve as a ChromeOS alternative on hardware-limited devices.

Microsoft aimed to deploy Windows 10 on one billion devices in three years, but they achieved that goal in early 2021. As of now, Windows 10 is Microsoft's most popular operating system, surpassing the famous Windows 7, and is utilized by 73% of active PC users globally, as well as 26% of all modern devices.
