Tails is a portable operating system developed on top of a recent version of Linux that enables users of all skill levels to maintain their privacy and anonymity while using any computer or accessing the internet. Tails OS, which is designed from the ground up to avoid surveillance, censorship, advertising, and infections, allows everyone to have access to a safe working environment on any current PC.

Users of this free operating system have simple access to a wide range of not only OS-level security features, but also a robust digital security toolkit with handy tools for handling protected documents, private online communication, and more. Once booted into a live system, users can freely control their data and internet connectivity, and once finished, they can remove the portable Tails drive from the PC, erasing all traces of their work.

Tails' basic functionality is achieved through a few clever decisions made by its developers. The OS can only be booted from external portable drives, with no data reaching the local storage on those PCs (unless users allow it). All contact with the outside world is encrypted, including the use of an anonymized Tor internet network that hides the origin location and routing data while traversing the online infrastructure. Finally, all OS functions and installation programs are preconfigured to be as secure as possible.

Tails uses cutting-edge cryptographic technologies to encrypt all outgoing and receiving files, instant messages, and emails. It includes a web browser, office suite, picture and sound editor, instant messaging client, and other security and privacy-optimized tools.

Since both local PCs, internet gateways, and websites now keep a variety of information about users' activities, operating systems like as Tails have become a must-have for a diverse range of computer users who want to remain anonymous, secure their data, and information sources. Over the last decade, it has become a security community staple, frequently used by activists, journalists, sources of journalists who want to share sensitive data, domestic violence survivors, and anyone else seeking extensive privacy in a digital world where every user's every move is carefully monitored.

Tails is completely free and works on any modern desktop PC or laptop that can identify and boot from external storage devices including USB disks, SD cards, and burnt DVDs.
