HandBrake

HandBrake is a free and open-source utility that converts video files from almost any format to a variety of current, widely supported codecs. It allows anyone to simply prepare camera movies for playback on a wide range of devices, including all iPhone, iPod, and Apple TV models, as well as Android phones and tablets. Of course, the tool fully supports one of the most common video conversion operations of all time: transferring movies from DVDs to your hard drive by converting them to MPEG-4 format. You can apply a variety of video filters (grayscale, detelecine, decomb, deinterlace, noise reduction, deblock), as well as change the video codec, quality, and framerate, audio codec, mixdown, sample frequency rate, and bitrate. 

Eric Petit designed HandBrake in 2003, originally for the short-lived BeOS operating system, although it was later ported to Windows, macOS, and Linux (Ubuntu). Petit remained engaged in the app's development until 2006, when he resigned and let its community to continue working on upgrades (initially branded "MediaFork" but subsequently renamed Handbrake).
