Google Chat is a cloud-based conversation software developed by Google and made available for free to all Google Account holders.

This service is based on the Google Hangout Chat feature. After a period of major updates, Google decided to shut down Hangouts and replace it with two new chat services: Google Meet, a new Google service for fast, secure, and easy video calls; and Google Chat for Windows PCs, which is meant to make text messaging easier between users who are working together in the Google Workspace suite, like on Google Drive documents.

It was originally designed as a premium component of Google Workspace (previously known as G Suite), allowing customers in business, education, and government to collaborate more readily during their everyday work. However, after announcing intentions to make Google Workspace free for all customers, the company simultaneously announced adjustments to its text communication services.

This includes the discontinuation of Hangouts and the promotion of Google Chat as their primary text messaging service. This web app, which was previously only available to Google customers as "early access," is now open to all free Google Account members.

It enables users to not only communicate directly with other users but also to build Rooms in which several users can post and engage freely. The program allows for easy embedding of video, sharing of Google Drive files, and adjustable notification settings for each room.

The program duplicates several features found in other workplace chat systems such as Slack and Microsoft Teams, with numerous background services that allow for simplified communication not only in education, business, and huge government organizations but also between family members and friends.

Google Chat, of course, fully integrates video chatting, with support for group video chat (up to 8 people), resizable video windows, and the ability to overlay text chat over video feeds rather than resizing video windows to make room for the text chatbox.

Google Chat is available for free to all Google Account members. Users with an up-to-date Google Chrome browser can download the app as a standalone app. In addition to browser access, Google Chat is available as an iOS and Android app.
