FreeNAS is an operating system that may be deployed on almost any hardware platform to share data across a network. The app is the simplest method to organize and easily retrieve your info. Use FreeNAS with ZFS to safeguard, store, and back up all of your information. It is utilized in a variety of settings, including the households, small businesses, and large enterprises.

FreeNAS is now TrueNAS CORE. The world's most common storage operating system.

FreeNAS for PC is an open-source NAS operating system based on FreeBSD. It provides a network-based platform for storing and sharing data, making it an excellent choice for both home and small business situations. Its powerful features and user-friendly interface enable users to build a centralized storage system that is dependable, secure, and scalable.

ZFS is an enterprise-grade open-source file system, RAID controller, and volume management with unrivaled flexibility and an unwavering commitment to data integrity. It eliminates the majority, if not all, of the flaws encountered in traditional file systems and hardware RAID devices. Once you've tried ZFS, you'll never want to go back.

The Web Interface simplifies administrative tasks. Every component of a FreeNAS system can be handled via a Web interface. SMB/CIFS (Windows File Shares), NFS (Unix File Shares), AFP (Apple File Shares), FTP, iSCSI (block sharing), and more. Snapshots of the complete file system can be created and saved at any moment. Access the files as they were when the snapshot was created. Use the Replication capability to send Snapshots over a network to another system for genuine off-site disaster recovery.

Highlights

File Sharing
This program excels at file sharing. Every major operating system is supported, including SMB/CIFS (Windows file shares), NFS (Unix file shares), and AFP (Apple File Shares), as well as FTP, iSCSI (block sharing), WebDAV, and other network-based data sharing protocols. iSCSI also works with VMware VAAI, Microsoft ODX, and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and 2012 R2 Clustering.

Web Interface
If Free NAS has one purpose, it is to simplify complex administrative procedures for as many users as possible. Every part of the system can be controlled using a Web User Interface. A setup Wizard simplifies settings either during installation or later in the setup process. Volume creation, permissions on individual shares, and software updates can all be completed without skipping a vital step or experiencing a quiet failure.

ZFS prioritizes data integrity throughout its design. RAID-Z, a software RAID built into ZFS, provides single parity protection similar to RAID 5, but without the "write hole" issue due to ZFS's copy-on-write architecture. The extra levels, RAID-Z2 and RAID-Z3, provide double and triple parity protection, respectively. A software mirroring option is also available. The Free NAS Volumes screen displays all conceivable parity arrangements based on the number of disks selected when creating a new volume.

Snapshots
Snapshots can be taken on a one-time basis or scheduled as a cron job via the web interface. At any moment, the entire filesystem can be restored to the most recent snapshot. Older snapshots can be cloned and used to restore data from that version of the filesystem. Users can utilize the web interface to monitor how much space a certain snapshot takes up on the disk and delete, clone, or roll back to individual snapshots as needed.

Replication ZFS Snapshots can be used to produce both local and distant backups. Replicating snapshots of the filesystem to a remote ZFS filesystem results in a complete duplicate. Furthermore, further snapshots of the same disk can be delivered progressively, lowering the size of each backup to reflect the changes made between snapshots. In the event of catastrophic damage to a local ZFS filesystem (such as disk failure beyond parity protection or irrecoverable log device failure), any backed-up snapshot can be transferred to a new ZFS filesystem, restoring all data up to that point.

FreeNAS for Windows 11/10 is the only open-source project that provides encryption for ZFS volumes. During volume creation, a full-volume encryption option is offered, enabling industry-standard AES-XTS encryption that can be hardware-accelerated (if the processor supports AES-NI).

Plugins
It includes the essential functionalities of a NAS equipment out of the box. However, many customers want to supplement their NAS devices with third-party software for video streaming, alternate protocols, or web applications.

Features

  • It uses the ZFS file system, which provides extensive data protection capabilities like data integrity checking, snapshotting, and replication.
  • Web-based Interface: It offers a web-based management interface that allows customers to configure and administer their storage system using any web browser.
  • Data Encryption: Users can encrypt their data to preserve privacy and security, with encryption supported both at rest and in transit.
  • Plugins & Extensions: It supports a large number of plugins and extensions, allowing users to add features like video streaming, virtualization, and backup services.
  • Remote Access: It provides remote access to files and services via VPN and FTP, allowing users to view their data from anywhere.

How to Use

Initial Setup: After installation, users should adjust network settings and storage pools as needed.
Users can build shares to make data available to other network users, specifying permissions and access controls as needed.
Adding Storage: It supports a variety of storage alternatives, including as hard disks, SSDs, and network-attached storage devices. Users can add storage devices and form storage pools to increase their storage capacity.
Configuring Services: It supports a wide range of services, including file sharing, media streaming, and backup. Users can enable and configure these services via the web interface.
Monitoring and Maintenance: It includes tools for tracking system health, managing storage consumption, and executing routine maintenance tasks including data cleansing and updates.
