Firebird is a relational database that supports many ANSI SQL standard features and runs on Linux, Windows, and a number of Unix platforms. The application provides outstanding concurrency, fast performance, and robust language support for stored procedures and triggers. It has been utilized in production systems under several names since 1981.

The Firebird Project is a commercially independent collaboration of C and C++ programmers, technical advisors, and supporters working to develop and improve a multi-platform relational database management system based on the source code released by Inprise Corp (now known as Borland Software Corp) on July 25, 2000.

Anyone can create a custom version of Firebird as long as the modifications are made accessible under the same IDPL license for others to use and develop upon. There are no payments for downloading, registering, licensing, or deploying Fire Bird, even if you distribute it as part of your commercial software bundle.
