Birdfont for Windows is a free font editor that allows you to design vector drawings and generate TTF, EOT, and SVG fonts. This is a free app, but donations of $10 USD or more on the developer page will grant you access to the commercial edition of the program, which allows you to design proprietary fonts. Download now!

Birdfont for PC allows you to quickly begin working on your own font as soon as you launch the software, without complicated things with difficult-to-use tools. The interface is designed to be incredibly useful, allowing you to easily access all of the functions need to begin the creative process.

Features & Highlights

Color fonts with embedded SVG files.
OpenType-SVG color fonts are a relatively new format, and not all software support them. Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge already allow color fonts, but Chrome lags behind. Creating monochromatic fallback glyphs might be time-consuming if your glyphs have a large number of little elements (hundreds or thousands). In addition, will glyphs with too many details struggle to fit on the TTF grid? You can overcome this issue by creating an empty fallback glyph and importing a monochrome version with fewer features of your colored letters.

Stylistic Alternatives
Alternates allow you to set multiple glyphs on the same Unicode character and choose which glyph should be displayed when the font is used. The HTML preview file includes examples of how to select which alternate to display when the font is used on the web. (Control+P or Command+P)

Line Spacing
You can modify the line height by altering the top and bottom margin guides. The margin guides are red.

Edit the path.
Adjust the positions of all control points and handles. You can add points to the path by double-clicking on it. Delete points using the delete or backspace keys (shift + delete to break the path). If you wish to preserve a handle's angle while adjusting its length, click on it and hold down the shift key. Press w to switch between the smooth and corner nodes. To move the canvas, hold down the space key and then click. To move a point independently of its handle, click on it and then press shift.

Create a font in Illustrator.
The copy and paste commands are the quickest way to transfer your drawings from Illustrator or Inkscape to BirdFont for Desktop, but you can also save your work as SVG files and import it into the software. It is recommended that you transform your paths to plain outlines with no strokes before importing them into the program.

Differences Between SVG and TTF.
There's a mathematical distinction between quadratic and cubic Beziér curves. Most SVG editors utilize a cubic form, whereas TrueType outlines can only have quadratic control points. The application will convert your cubic splines to quadratic paths, however the process is not lossless, and the converted paths will have more points than the original paths. You can avoid this difficulty by generating your glyphs directly in the PC software, using just quadratic control points. Another constraint of the TTF format is the set number of units per em. Most TTF fonts employ 1000 units per em, which may cause distortions if your font includes small features. By default, Bird Font will record control point positions in floating-point format, but you can modify this in the settings page.

Note: You need a commercial license if you want to create proprietary fonts.
