ARChon (also known as ARChon Runtime for Chrome) is a versatile custom extension for the Chrome or Chromium browser that allows you to run Android apps directly on a Windows PC and a number of other supported systems. Originally created by Vlad Filippov as a clone of Google's official "App Runtime for Chrome" package, this simplified emulator quickly gained a reputation for stability and advanced features, such as the ability to run any Android app as a ChromeOS app.

Because ARChon is built on the "App Runtime for Chrome" technology (also known as ARC Welder), it benefits from having its code handled natively in the browser. This capability is part of the successful Google effort known as the Native Client, which allows the Chrome browser to safely run native code.

Until now, getting Android emulation working on your Chrome browser was difficult since Google has focused its efforts on enabling App emulation on the ChromeOS platform, rendering the desktop version of the Chrome browser incompatible with the ARC Chrome. Developer Vlad Filippov addressed the issue by producing his own version of this package.

With a few simple steps, you can integrate ARChon and its Android app emulation into your Windows OS everyday workflow. To use the emulator extension, manually load it as an "unpacked extension" before loading Android apps. However, there is one limitation. This extension can only load Chrome OS programs, therefore users must first convert their Android APK files to this format using a small "chromeos-apk" tool written on top of the Node.js framework.

It is vital to notice that the app has no user-facing interface elements. Once installed in your Chrome browser, it becomes an invisible service that runs in the background whenever you open your Android apps (which have been turned into ChromeOS apps). To start an app, users just launch it from the "Apps" (chrome://apps) tab.

Because of constant upgrades supplied by the open-source community, the app's compatibility has improved over its original release version. However, certain apps may remain unresponsive during boot and fail to load. Apps that do manage to load may have slowdowns or crashes, and some apps cannot be accessible entirely since they require the existence of other Android services such as Google Apps and others. It also has a noticeable launch problem that affects many apps and may be resolved with a simple text file edit. Regardless, this flaw will prevent many PC beginners from using this app reliably for Android app emulation.

The program is completely free and can be downloaded on any current PC capable of running the ever-expanding Chrome Browser application, which powers the internet browsing of the vast majority of online users worldwide. In addition to being compatible with the Windows OS version of Chrome, it can also be used on macOS and Linux.
